A bit of backgroundI was hot on the trail of what I thought would be THE ideal job that would allow me to travel AND get paid for doing it - I would be a Flight Attendant! My 5'11" height fit the requirements - people would often say, "You'd make a great stewardess or model." Well, the tomboy in me wasn't interested in modeling, but travel? Yes! That's what I got excited about. In my early teens, I already knew without a doubt that I would work in travel. Didn't know how or what I'd do, but I knew it was in travel.The universe obviously had bigger plans for me!
Fast forward a few years and my airline career wasn't taking off! Hmph! I don't think they took me seriously.
Holding my own at the age of 17 with 3 jobs and a recently purchased brand new car, I needed a break so my best friend and I decided to take a well-deserved vacation. For our first major trip out of North America, we headed to the ocean for an incredible week in Acapulco, Mexico - that week changed my life forever, completely - this was the beginning of a beautiful friendship and major detour in my road!
Falling in love with Mexico...ok, so Miguel, the bouncer of Baby 'O was pretty cool, too! :)
I fell in love with the Spanish language, the smells, the ocean - people were smiling all the time! "I can totally see myself living here", I thought - the beach and palm trees, the taco carts on the street, fabulous nightlife - tourists and locals, everyone was happy!
I felt right at home. So much in fact, that when I got home from that trip, I was already planning my return ... and I did, 6 months later! The turning point on that 2nd trip was when a waiter at our hotel asked me, "Why don't you come and live here?" And I thought, "Yeah, why don't I?"
Six months after that trip, I sold my car, walked away from 3 jobs, and with one packed suitcase and some cash from the sale of my car in my pocket, I was on a plane to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico!!
The rest, my friends, is history ... amazing people, adventures, cool jobs - fabulous living!
Leap of faith
I'm am utterly grateful for taking that leap of faith - my life is awesome! Not always easy, but awesome! Not for a second did I miss the jobs I left, the car I sold or the life I walked away from in Canada. And my family and friends...well, if they really wanted to see me, they knew where to find me! And they did!
A dream, a decision, faith in myself, and action opened my world up to a life I couldn't have ever imagined! And, of course, what led to the famous question ..."How did you get this job?!"
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Home Sweet Home
I stayed in Vallarta for 10 years before exploring other destinations and opportunities - I was there when the first MacDonald's come into town!! That was a huge event since the closest Big Mac was a 3 hour drive away in Guadalajara! That's a long haul when you're having a Big Mac attack!
Today, Vallarta is one of the hottest destinations on the planet! Real estate is exploding and Baby Boomers are building their retirement dream homes for a measly $100,000!But what's not to love? The sun shines almost everyday (I love the rainy days, too), the scuba diving is fantastic, the gorgeous beaches are endless, the people are super, the ocean is spectacular ... it's fabulous!
