THE RESUMEIn no more than two pages, this is the guts and glory of your personal work history so write a free resume like you're paying a professional! This information can be presented in two different resume outlines:Reverse Chronological or Functional. Both will include the same data, just ordered differently. These resume styles and tips will greatly enhance the appearance, wording, and overall presentation of your resume, no matter what your experience or background.
Contact information: Correctly spelled at the top, your name, full mailing address, telephone number (including area code) and email address.
Character Summary: 6-8 points of summary statements describing your work performance and experience, for example: - Highly outgoing, motivated trilingual individual [English, Spanish, French] with a positive outlook
- Able to handle complaints and customer requests professionally and efficiently
- Well organized, proven ability to work well under pressure by meeting objectives and takes pride in outstanding performance
Employment History Reverse Chronological resumes will list the last three jobs starting with the most recent and bullet point detailing key duties. Functional resumes will list 2-3 of your strongest areas of work, eg. Customer service, Accounting, Administrative. Bullet point detailing key duties. If you just finished school and don’t have a lot of work experience, volunteer work is just as valuable. Include name of company, location, dates of employment, position held, brief description of your duties and responsibilities in that position. If you have been promoted you definitely want to list that here.
Education and Professional Development List all your education starting with the most recent. If you have a college or university degree there is no need to put down high school. You will want to include dates, programs and names of school. You will want to include any vocational or extracurricular courses you have done even if they are not related to the job you are applying for. These types of courses show you are willing to learn and further develop your skills.
Special Skills, Interests & Volunteer You may decide to combine these together or keep them separate. Include any computer programs you have operational knowledge of. You can include volunteer work, certifications, affiliations and any safety training you have done such as CPR.
References The last line on your resume can read “References Available Upon Request”. Not a ‘must’, though. It is important, however, that you have a list of references ready when the time comes. Most references can be from past employers or co-workers. Don’t forget to notify anyone you’re using as a reference. Send them an updated resume. Explain what position you are applying for, and to hopefully expect a phone call from a potential employer.
HELPFUL RESUME HINTS
- Your resume needs to be accurate (don't rely on your computer’s spell-check) and neat in appearance
- Like your cover letter, avoid using “I” when describing your duties and responsibilities - trying using action words such as: Ensured, Achieved, Prepared, Implemented, Assisted, Coordinated, Handled, Devised, Organized, Established, Performed, Saved, Developed, Initiated, Directed, Trained, Motivated, etc
- If you are submitting a picture make sure it is recent and in color. No need to spend a lot of money on a professional picture, passport size is fine. Business attire for the picture shoot is recommend
- Use full size 9x12 business envelopes and be sure to send your packages off with sufficient postage
- Included in the Coach Call is an assessment or 'critique' of your resume & cover
